Abstract

This is a case report on the educational practice in First Aid conducted through an academic extension project for teachers at a public elementary school in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, which has a staff of 54 teachers and serves 570 students enrolled in morning and afternoon shifts. The development of the educational practices on First Aid took place in five stages: (i) creation of the working group and discussion of the proposal; (ii) presentation of the proposal and scheduling with the principal of the public school in Belo Horizonte; (iii) review of scientific articles in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) to support the educational activity; (iv) planning and organization of the educational activity and preparation of teaching materials; (v) implementation and evaluation of the educational activity in the school. The educational activity was conducted by five undergraduate extension students under the supervision of one professor from the Nursing program, responsible for the curricular unit “Nursing Process in Urgency and Emergency.” The school participants (1 principal and 10 teachers) had a mean age of 32 years, with 12 (92%) being female and 1 (8%) male. Only 4 (31%) had previously taken any first aid course, although all participants recognized the importance of acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to provide initial care in urgent and emergency situations within the school environment. In addition, this approach carried out with early childhood education teachers strengthens collaboration between health and education, creating a safer environment for children and educators by keeping them informed about potential causes and appropriate actions in urgent and emergency situations.
