Abstract

This study analyzes representations of the figure of Majesty, highlighting its permanence and transformation over time. The research takes as its starting point the figures of the King and the Emperor in the Mantegna Tarot (1470–1475), exploring how their symbolic elements are reiterated across various visual media and historical contexts, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Methodologically, the study employs Panofsky’s iconographic approach and Warburg’s concept of Pathosformeln, enabling the identification of symbolic and emotional patterns that span the longue durée. The sources include historical playing cards, illuminations, paintings, and sculptures. The analysis reveals the continuity of elements such as regalia, which, even when resignified, maintain their connection to regal power.
