Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the use of music in narrative or documentary podcasts, drawing on theoretical
contributions from sound studies in cinema in dialogue with the field of radio and sound media. Following
the discussions of Vicente (2024), Jáuregui (2024), and Jáuregui e Viana (2022), we developed an analytical
exercise on a corpus composed of the trailers of three Brazilian podcasts: Alexandre (Piauí/Trovão
Mídia), Lira: os atalhos do poder (Uol Prime), and Janja (Uol Prime). To this end, we invoked and adapted
the categories proposed by Gorbman (1987), originally formulated for the study of orchestral music
in cinema. As a result, we identified a set of narrative, aesthetic, and editorial gestures undertaken by
music in these sound productions and presented reflections on the propriety of the proposed theoretical
exchanges.
