Abstract

To reflect on the resistance of Black women in young adult literature, this study takes Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X as its corpus. The analysis establishes a dialogue between the novel and Patricia Hill Collins’ (2019) concept of self-definition as resistance. The methodological approach is based on the analysis of the book’s poems, which highlight the controlling images imposed on the protagonist, her subjective response in the form of poetic resistance, and the role of collectivity in this process of subjectivation. Within this framework, the study investigates how Acevedo’s escrevivente construction articulates self-definition in the trajectory of the protagonist, Xiomara.
