Abstract

This theoretical work aims to discuss psychotherapy as dialectical praxis in the face of socio-sexual inequality. We approach the conscious-unconscious dialectic taking consciousness as a set of functions and processes that enable the subject to know and act on reality, and the unconscious from the cultural aspects, as a pole of the same relationship with consciousness. We understand that such instances of the psyche relate to sexuality through nonverbal (sentimental-emotional) configurations and processes, allowing the subject to develop his or her sexual identifications even without understanding them. From the assumptions of qualitative research we discuss the historicity of clinical practice and possible implications of the historical-dialectical materialist method for psychotherapy. We point out the need for psychotherapeutic praxis to enable the movement from unconsciousness of reality to social-sexual consciousness, a political position that can enhance the thinking and action of the subjects.
