Resumo

O objetivo deste artigo é discutir questões epistemológicas fundamentais na ciência da religião, identificando uma série de problemas metodológicos que surgiram entre o período da epistemologia clássica e das abordagens contemporâneas da disciplina. Inicialmente, destaca-se a tentativa de abandono da palavra religião sem uma análise adequada, resultando em mal-entendidos e críticas superficiais à utilização do termo de origem latina. Em seguida, o artigo questiona a falta de distinção entre religião e religiosidade, discutindo suas consequências. O terceiro desafio metodológico abordado é a dificuldade em alcançar um consenso definicional sobre o uso de religião como categoria central, no contexto de propostas para promover convergência nesse sentido. O artigo conclui defendendo a necessidade de que a ciência da religião forneça conhecimento cientificamente estabelecido sobre seu objeto de estudo, deixando questões além desse escopo para outras disciplinas.
