The search for and acquisition of information about orthodontic treatments available on social media is growing intensely, practically in the same proportion as the number of posts made by patients and/or professionals. Objective: This study verified the degree of influence of virtual communication processes used to disseminate information about orthodontic treatments on patients' expectations regarding orthodontic treatment, on the quality of communication between the orthodontist and the patient, and on the conduct and/or strategies that orthodontists adopt to adapt and individualize the treatment. Materials and Methods: The methodology employed was based on a literature review of publications included in the virtual database platforms Lilacs, Scopus, PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane and Embase in the last 10 years using the descriptors: orthodontic appliance; orthodontic communication; patient-orthodontist relationship; patient expectation; virtual platforms; social media; persuasive communication; online social networks; orthodontics and patient preference. Results: Of the 6 articles retrieved from Scopus, only 1 article was selected; of the 9 articles retrieved from Web of Science, all 9 articles were selected; of the 51 articles retrieved from PubMed/Medline, 33 articles were selected; of the 8 articles retrieved from Lilacs, 6 articles were selected; of the 6 articles retrieved from Cochrane, no articles were selected; and of the 16 articles retrieved from Embase, 5 articles were selected. Conclusion: It is concluded that orthodontists develop assertive communication with their patients, practicing active listening, explaining the possibilities and limitations inherent in each case, and personalizing treatment according to the patient's expectations, thus contributing to the development of patient-centered care.
