Abstract

The case of the Cotijuba Island, municipality of Belém (PA), is presented in the text from the view of local social movements about the potentialities and weaknesses of the island, pointed out in social cartography, interviews and experiences. It is observed that popular initiative action supports the local way of life in the context of isolation and public control of the land, but has limitations that can only be properly overcome with adequate public policies and long-term perspective, which recognize the multiple faces and functions of the island, without reducing it to the condition of metropolitan periphery.
